That\u2019s part of being a kid! But it can be\ndifficult to know what qualifies as a dental emergency in the moment. Here are\nsome things to watch for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Severe toothache.<\/li><li>Broken or chipped tooth.<\/li><li>Deeply bitten (or lacerated) tongue, lip, or\ncheek.<\/li><li>Lost filling or crown.<\/li><li>Knocked-out baby tooth.<\/li><li>Knocked-out permanent tooth.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In some situations, you can handle the treatment yourself,\nbut when it comes to a dental emergency, you really need to seek a\nprofessional\u2019s help. Dental problems don\u2019t go away on their own; in fact, they\nonly get worse as time goes by. So if your child experiences any of these\nconditions, contact your pediatric dentist right away!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I take my child to the ER?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you\u2019re welcome to bring your child to an emergency\nroom, urgent care clinic, or pediatrician, you likely will not be satisfied\nwith the results. At most, these facilities can provide pain medication and\nantibiotics, but they simply aren\u2019t equipped or trained to handle dental\nissues. Your best bet is to take your child to the pediatric dentist for immediate\ntreatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can I do to help my child in a dental emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your first step in a dental emergency should always be to\ncall your pediatric dentist. They can schedule an urgent appointment for your\nchild, often on the same day. Plus, they can give you advice for handling the\nsituation until you\u2019re able to come in. This advice may include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Give your child over-the-counter pain medication\nto manage discomfort.<\/li><li>Use a cold compress to keep swelling to a\nminimum.<\/li><li>Do not touch the root of the tooth and store it\nin warm water or milk to keep it moist.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you can\u2019t plan when or how a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagopedoortho.com\/emergency-dentistry.html\">child dental\nemergency<\/a> will occur, you can have a plan in place for your response.
